Luxury can mean different things to different people. For me, it’s about privacy, freedom, and an exquisite sense of space, combined with subtle hospitality that makes you feel effortlessly at home. Jade Mountain embodies this and more. Perched high on St. Lucia’s rugged cliffs, this architectural marvel, crafted from local stone and rough concrete, rises organically from the lush forest. Designed by Canadian architect Nick Troubetzkoy, Jade Mountain frames the breathtaking views of the Pitons from each of its 29 spacious residences (known as sanctuaries). The pinnacle of luxury, Galaxy Sanctuary JE1, features uninterrupted 270-degree views and a 900-square-foot infinity pool with jewel-toned tiles. Here, serenity reigns supreme. —Karin Mueller

  • Jumby Bay

    Gold List 2018, 2023Readers’ Choice Awards 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024, 2026

Reopened in October 2017 as an Oetker Collection member (formerly a Rosewood resort), Jumby Bay Island is accessible only by boat, with not a car in sight—though there are plenty of bikes available to navigate this 300-acre island off the northern coast of Antigua. With only 40 accommodations in total—rooms and villas— you’ll never feel the need to get off the all-inclusive island (although, if curious, there is a complimentary ferry service to the mainland). You’ll be plenty busy on one of the resort’s three tennis courts, in one of the three pools, or on the more than four miles of beach. The cheerful decor throughout the property is the work of Brazilian interior designer Patricia Anastassiadis, of Anastassiadis Arquitetos. —Rosalyn Wikeley

This intimate boutique hotel, located on the south coast of the island of Antigua, oozes classic Caribbean charm. A colonial-style, whitewashed building forms the central part of the 20-acre estate, encircled by outbuildings awash in baby pink and shaded by lush, leafy palms. Thanks to the hotel’s unique perch on a secluded promontory, you’ll be flanked by azure-blue waters on all sides: Guests can lounge at the hotel’s two beaches entirely undisturbed, except for the peppy team members who intermittently come around with drinks and ice pops. Days here are spent lolling by the two pools and working up a sweat at the four (yes, four!) tennis courts, before ending with relaxed Caribbean dinners and live jazz. —Sophie Knight

  • Spice Island Beach Resort

    Readers’ Choice Awards 2018

Perched on the quieter, southern end of Grand Anse Beach, Spice Island Beach Resort has a reputation for being old-school perfect. Yes, effortless charm is a Grenadian thing, but it’s mainlined here. King Charles and Queen Camilla once stayed (in the insanely private Cinnamon Suite), and we can see why. It feels deliciously tranquil, all sitting-under-a-palm-tree-sipping-a-rum-punch perfect. You’ll want one of the Seagrape Beach suites, a shell’s throw from the shallow, bath-warm waters, with its own hammock ready to lull you into the best nap of your life. Despite being one of the original island hot spots, this place still feels fresh. There’s a gorgeous spa, new rooms with plunge pools, and a brilliant kids club so you can wolf down your grilled snapper in peace. The all-inclusive package here includes all meals (even afternoon tea) and drinks, as well as non-powered water sports, tennis, and bicycles to pedal your way around the area, with some of the island’s best shopping just a hop, skip, and jump away.

  • Necker Island

    Readers’ Choice Awards 2022

    Location: British Virgin Islands

Necker Island is the creation of Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, who has transformed what was once a scrubby, 74-acre British Virgin Island cay into a fortress of lush greenery, serene Balinese villas, exotic animals ranging from local flamingos to endangered lemurs and tortoises, and solar panels and wind turbines that make the island self-sustaining. The resort is accessible only by boat from nearby Tortola—no private-plane runway here—which makes it feel more approachable and refuge-like, especially compared to some other private-island hospitality projects. Every inch of the place feels like a Bond hideaway: tropical canopies, white-sand beaches, lagoons filled with flamingos, infinity-pooled suites, and cozy lounges. A sprawling hilltop Great House has far-flung views of the azure waters around the island; there’s also a billiards table, board games, a bar (one of many on the island), and dining nooks with incredible views where five-star dinners and healthy breakfasts are served. —Shannon McMahon

  • Cap Maison Resort & Spa

    Readers’ Choice Awards 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2025

There’s a Spanish feel to St. Lucia’s Cap Maison, with its eye-catching Hispanic tilework, terra-cotta urns, and meticulously tended lush gardens. This former sugar plantation takes hold on a cliff like a small, orderly village, its cluster of three-story white buildings giving off the impression that this is more a private residence than a resort. And that’s the pull. Rooms are kitted out with local paintings, oversized chaise lounges, and balconies, some with their own small pools. With only 50 suites, there’s a quiet luxury to the place, but still plenty to keep you occupied with watersports, snorkeling trips, and daily hikes to the secluded East Coast on offer, as well as jaunts on the hotel’s shiny motor yacht. Don’t miss a chance to take drinks on Rock Maison, a wooden deck on a rocky outcrop at the base of the cliffs, where Champagne arrives in a basket on a zipline. Meals and drinks by the glass are included in the all-inclusive rates (some fine-dining options incur an additional cost), but if you fancy venturing out, staff will sort you a car and a driver in a jiffy.

    Readers’ Choice Awards 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025, 2026

Coming to Jamaica Inn feels like staying with a warm but grand auntie. Staff, who do nothing but beam whenever you ask for anything, genuinely want you to have a brilliant time and go out of their way to welcome you with open arms. Since opening in 1950, this hotel quickly earned a reputation as being one of the most understatedly elegant and discreet hotels on the island, attracting movie stars like Marilyn Monroe and Katharine Hepburn when they wanted to hole away from the prying eyes of paparazzi. Today, there’s a low-key glamour to the place, with a sweeping private beach and just 52 suites, all boasting epic sea views. Cottages have private plunge pools, large verandas, and secluded showers, ideal for romantic souls, and there’s a soothing spa built into the cliffs at Cutlass Bay, with treatments drawn from plants on the island. • Petit St. Vincent

    Readers’ Choice Awards 2018, 2019, 2020

Location: St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Petit St. Vincent is located on a private island of densely forested hills and coral-sand beaches, where the emptiness makes it feel like unclaimed wilderness. This is where the wild things are: no cars, barely any people, just jungle giving way to beaches and the horizon beyond. You feel as if it’s yours and yours alone, hardly surprising given there are just 22 one- and two-bedroom cottages and villas, built from hand-quarried native volcanic stone, with creamy walls and Italian linens, wooden sun decks and loungers. Guests pay a food and beverage surcharge that covers all meals and non-alcoholic beverages, including cooked-to-order specialities and unlimited hand-caught lobster (between November and April), plus afternoon tea and weekly barbecue dinners, not to mention watersports and extra activities such as rum tasting and yoga classes.
